Haleakalā National Park
Take in the scenic views of Maui’s number one attraction. The national park is known as the “House of the Sun” do to its association with the story of the cultural figure Maui lassoing the sun to lengthen the days. It lives up to its name in more ways that one, with the simply stunning views of the rising and setting sun that it offers. It is a great place for hiking, biking or stargazing. Haleakalā Crater is a natural erosional valley with cliffs over 1800ʻ deep and filled with rare and unique plants and animals.

Native Hawaiian birds hold great significance in Hawaiian culture. They are featured prominently in Hawaiian mo‘olelo (stories), revered as ʻaumakua (guardian spirits), and their feathers are used for adornment. One such bird is the ‘apapane, or Hawaiian honeycreeper, known for its vibrant crimson feathers. These feathers were highly prized by Hawaiian nobility and were used to create ‘ahu ‘ula (feather capes), mahiole (helmets), kāhili (feather standards), and nā lei hulu (feather lei).
Observing and appreciating birds can deepen our understanding of the natural world and the interconnectedness of all living beings.
Hike the Crater
There's no better way to immerse yourself in the beauty of Haleakalā National Park than by hiking its diverse trails. Explore the park's two distinct districts and marvel at the stunning landscapes. To protect the fragile Hawaiian ecosystems, it's crucial to always stay on marked trails.
We will walk the Pa Ka’oao Trail (.4 mile round-trip) to observe ancient rock walls, shelters, and a breathtaking crater view. Next, we'll drive skyward to Pu’u’ula’ula, where we will explore the summit, and you'll have a chance to examine the endangered Silversword plant.

Insight
Haleakalā, the massive shield volcano that makes up the bulk of the island of Maui, makes for a great place to look out over the surrounding national park and the greater whole of the island. This tour begins with a meeting at the Kahului Park and Ride at 9:30 AM or 2:30 PM (please let us know if you would like to arrange transportation to and from your hotel).
From Kahului, your private guide will drive you up into Haleakalā National Park to the summit area, making various short stops along the way. You will go right to the top of the mountain and be able to explore some of the hiking trails up there with your guide.
Lots of quick stops and short walks keep the time passing quickly. Your last stop in the park is to enjoy a short hike in a cloud forest thick with vibrant foliage. Keep an eye out for local wildlife! The guide will return you to Kahului after about 5 hours.
Program
- Start at sea level, then traverse through a variety of terrain, including sugar cane fields, rolling countryside, green pastureland, and old lava fields
- Take a stroll through a cloud forest featuring a hundred-year-old grove of cedar, pine, spruce, and eucalyptus (.5 mile, 30-minute trail)
- Study flora, fauna, and the effects of invasive species
- Watch for native birds and listen to their calls
- Enjoy a light refreshment of fresh pineapple and banana bread
- Arrive at Haleakala Crater – approximately 10,000 feet above the ocean!
- Peruse the Haleakala Visitor Center, which showcases cultural & natural history exhibits, books, and maps
- Walk a portion of the Keonehe’ehe’e trail (20 minutes) to observe ancient rock walls,
shelters and an outstanding crater view - Drive to Pu’u’ula’ula where we will explore the summit (15-minute walk) and examine the highly endangered, endemic Silversword plant and telescope observatories
- Gaze at the horizon, revealing the outer-lying islands of Lana’i, Kaho’olawe, and Hawai’i (Big Island)
- Return to our starting point

Guidance
All guests must be able to walk one mile on uneven terrain. This excursion operates at a high altitude. This may complicate health conditions and cause breathing difficulties. If you have any respiratory or heart conditions, then a doctor’s clearance will be required. Pregnancy must also be disclosed to ensure safety. Visitors will be required to inspect their footwear and remove any dirt, debris and seeds before entering the tour vehicle.
