Hilo Volcano Adventure Tour Features
An Active Volcano!
We travel to Volcano National Park and an overlook of the active Kilauea Volcano. Witness the primitive process of creation and destruction in this ancient and powerful place. Feel the heat of steam vents rising from cracks in the earth and take a short hike through Thurston Lava Tube. The Visitor Center has videos and pictures of this awesome force of nature in action. You will learn the story of the most recent events that fascinated the country when the lava overtook large swaths of land in 2018.
See the beauty of Queen Liliuokalani Gardens – the largest Japanese-style gardens outside of Tokyo. The elegant bridges and gentle landscaping are designed to create a feeling of peace. We will drive along Banyan Drive – with its magnificent trees – to Richardson Beach Park, where you can dip your toes in the water at this unique black sand beach. Sometimes you will see the turtles swimming in in the water!
We will also visit the original King Kamehameha Statue so you can take a photo of your group with Kamehameha the Great!
Just a short drive from downtown Hilo, we will travel to Wailuku River State Park. Here you’ll discover an easily accessible 80-foot waterfall. Known as Waianuenue or “rainbow water,” Rainbow Falls was so named because on sunny mornings around 10 am, rainbows can be seen in the mist thrown up by the waterfall. The Rainbow Falls cascade 80 ft over a lava cave that, according to legends, is home to the ancient Hawaiian goddess Hina, the goddess of the moon. This is truly a natural wonder and should not be missed on a trip to Hawaii!

In the 1900s, Japanese immigrants moved to Hawaii to work in the sugar plantations. Soon, they began farming and selling taro as well as the leaves. Grandmother would make laulau – fresh meat wrapped and cooked in taro leaves. It became so popular they opened a restaurant to feed everyone over 25 years ago. You need to try his Hawaiian favorite!
