Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the perfect place to see it. See the steam vents and check out the destruction of the crater due to the last eruption in 2018. Kilauea is an ongoing eruption that has been continuously active since 1983. In 2018, Kilauea produced enough lava to fill over 400 football stadiums! These flows reach temperatures of 2,100 degrees F – the temperature of liquid rock! Come see this amazing natural wonder for yourself.
DeSee amazing natural formations, including the Kilauea Iki Steam Vents, and the overlook of the Halema’uma’u Crater. Begin your visit at the Kilauea Visitor Center for a great introduction to the park. The park’s free film “Born of Fire, Born of Sea” at the top of each hour is an excellent primer to learn about geology and volcanism, with remarkable highlights of past eruptions and features on Hawaiian culture and natural history. Moreover, the center provides the latest eruption information (every 30 minutes) maps and day hike trail guides, safety precautions, air quality and road conditions.
One of our stops will be at Punaluu Black Sand beach. The beach’s jet black shores are an unforgettable sight. Coconut palms fringe the upper edge of sand, and you may also discover large honu, (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles), basking on the beach. Rainbow Falls is another spectacle you must see. The Falls cascade 80 ft over a lava cave that, according to legends, is home to the ancient Hawaiian goddess Hina, the goddess of the moon. And of course, you’ll almost always see a rainbow in the mist. Our trip also includes a tour through Historic Hilo. This eclectic community is reminiscent of times gone by.
